HYDROMETEOROLOGY
CENTRE
Progress of industry, agriculture, shipping, air transport, communications,
water industry, recreation and a number of other industries in Azerbaijan
increasingly lay claims to the hydrometeorology service and make it
an integral part of the economic infrastructure.
The main functions of the Hydrometeorology Centre include development
of scientific principles for solving problems and implementation of
the solutions in different fields of the country's economy:
- Investigation
of causes of physical processes and phenomena occurring over the territory
of the Republic in the airspace up to the upper boundaries of the
troposphere and the resulting development of scientific principles
of the weather forecasting. Investigation of global climatic changes
and their effects for agricultural production and other industries;
- Studies of
surface water regimes, general water balance, development of methods
of the hydrologic forecasts, scientific proving of fresh water reserves
and their effective utilisation;
- Scientific
research aimed at solving complex problems of Azerbaijan sector of
the Caspian Sea, studies of water level fluctuations, long-term forecasting,
studies of trends in distribution of oceanologic parameters in time
and space;
- Assessment
of the contamination of the territory of the Republic and its sector
of the Caspian Sea by antropogenic dumps and resulting environmental
effects; development of a methodology for determination of the "ecological
loading" of natural environment's components; methods of forecasting
levels of contamination and contaminants' distribution over the Caspian
Sea in relation to hydrometeorologic factors; preparation of decontamination
measures;
- Investigation
and forecasting of dangerous hydrometeorologic phenomena (mud flows,
heavy showers, snow avalanches, hail, ice drifts, storms etc.) as
well as extreme environmental pollution is carried out in all four
sections.
