THE SECOND BAKU INTERNATIONAL CONGRESS

“ENERGY, ECOLOGY, ECONOMY”

17-20 AUGUST 1993

BAKU, AZERBAIJAN REPUBLIC

Welcoming Speech of the Chairman of the Second Baku International Symposium, F. Aliyev

Dear guests,

I have the honor to welcome you to the Second Baku International Symposium “Energy, Ecology, Economy”. The aim of the Symposium is to provide a scientific approach to a range of key current issues connected with energy and ecology. We shall be investigating the development of alternative energy resources, the economics of resource development, and the problems of radiation. We shall also be considering the threats to the ecology of the Caspian sea, an issue of immediate concern to us in Azerbaijan.

The issues we shall be confronting can hardly be overstated. We are now fully aware of the dangers posed by the acute shortage of our energy resources and the growth and impact of environmental pollution. Against this background, the Symposium offers us a major opportunity to set appropriate standards for present and future generations to preserve the ecological balance and natural variety of our planet.

I hope this Second International Symposium, like its forerunner, will continue to promote a climate of co-operation and understanding between the business and scientific community, experts and government agencies worldwide. The Symposium will give participants an excellent overview of the latest results of research and development, as well as disseminating new ides and information relating to scientific and technological themes. Equally important will be the opportunity for more informal meetings of delegates to exchange ideas and make new contacts.

We are particularly grateful to the British Petroleum Company, the sponsor of our Symposium, for their invaluable assistance and help with its organisation.

It is my pleasure to welcome you to the Second Baku International Symposium.
