DEPARTMENT "ECOLOGY "

Activities of the department include systematic research on: environmental issues of the Caspian basin and Absheron peninsula caused by oil and gas fields' development in the Contract area; problems in the agricultural sector of the state economy of Azerbaijan; establishment of regional ecological intrabasin management system aimed at obtaining biologically clean agricultural products; rational utilisation by phyto- and agrophytocenoses of radioactive energy and water resources; development and practical realisation of complex measures for recultivation of lands damaged during mining of organic and mineral raw materials and construction of surface and subsurface communications; examination of ecological state of saline and eroded soils and radiological conditions in agricultural regions with concentration of major industrial enterprises and development of measures for elimination of such conditions; ecology of vegetation, medical ecology and assessment of how the environment affects humane body; mechanisms and peculiarities of damaging effects from "ecological" UV-radiation for biologic systems.

The Department comprises 5 sections.

SECTION: ECOLOGY OF THE CASPIAN SEA

Objectives of the Section: research of the Caspian hydro-chemical regime and its main pollutants; determination of the bioproductivity level and its changes through the Caspian pollution and sea level dynamics; development of effective methods of increasing fish stocks and determination of damage caused to the fisheries by pollution and other industries; preservation of the recreation and balneologic resources of the sea; development of theoretic principles of the environmental monitoring and preservation of the bioresources.

SECTION: AGRICULTURAL ECOLOGY

Scientific research is undertaken in 4 directions:

  • development of diagnostics and typological classification of lands contaminated and damaged as a result of oil and gas production; modification of recultivation methods for technogenic lands as a result of mining of ferrous and non-ferrous metals and other mineral resources;
  • development of rational methods of melioration of saline and scabby lands and improvement of their fertility; selection of environmentally-clean meliorates with the purpose to prevent contamination of subsurface and drainage waters;
  • ecological and energy analysis of formation of phyto- and agrophytocenoses, evaluation of degree of completeness of utilisation of radiation energy by agrophytocenoses as well as assessment of reserves of the radiation resources for cultivation of additional crops and achievement of high crops with minimum energy consumption;
  • evaluation of degree of soil contamination caused by using mineral fertilisers and chemical pesticides and insecticides, regional mapping soil contamination with heavy metals and pesticides in the irrigated areas of the Republic.

SECTION: MEDICAL ECOLOGY

The objectives of the section are: investigation of the balance between the environment components (air, water, soil, food products) and chemical pollutants of different origin; relationships of the environment with various physical factors; influence of antropogenic factors and environmental changes on people's organism; forecasting of environmental changes and their effect on both the environmental balance and population health.

SECTION: ECOBIOPHYSICS

The objective of the section is: determination of primary biophysical mechanisms of effects from hazardous antropogenic factors at different levels of live (membrane, cell, organism).

SECTION: ECOLOGY OF FLORA and FAUNA.
