DEPARTMENT "ELECTROENERGY"

Natural resources and conditions of Azerbaijan contributed to development of the Republic's energy industry and its leading role, not only in the Caucasian Region but in the whole Soviet Union. Today the Republic energy supply system is represented by a range of thermal and hydraulic power stations with power more than 5000 MWt, including a major thermal power station with power 2400 MWt and good prospects for further expansion; long-distance transmission lines 35-110-220-350-500 kV and modern control and management systems.

Reliability and economic efficiency of the energy supply system is supported by a strong scientific and technical potential whose achievements are widely recognised, and not only in the CIS countries.

Scientific activity of the IEA scientists in energy development is carried out in three main directions:

  1. Development of the fuel and energy complex of Azerbaijan Republic.
  2. Increasing reliability, maintainability and economic efficiency of energy systems.
  3. Environment protection.
  4. Works along the first direction are undertaken with a view for future development and with consideration for fuel and energy complex of the bordering countries, development of power-generation structure, objectives of removal and upgrade of the energy equipment, programme of power supply and introduction of renewable energy sources in the fuel and energy balance.
  5. Works along the second direction are undertaken using newly-developed theories and methodologies, mathematics principles and algorithms controlling energy systems, procedures and tools of informatics and software support for management of technical processes and organisational-economic activities, methods and means improving reliability and economic efficiency of the energy equipment.
  6. Works in the third direction are related with prevention of ambient air pollution, caused by hazardous emissions from thermal power stations, by means of improvement of combustion processes, ash trapping as well as with prevention of a damaging effect from electric machines and magnetic fields for living organisms.
  7. In this complex of scientific research the following works found wide recognition and application: thermochemical softening of sea water for replenishment of losses of potable water, "bethel" resistor installations limiting short-circuit currents, emulgator installation for burning water-fuel oil emulsion and reducing hazardous emissions, work connected with designing and construction of electric transmission lines of super-high tension (1150 kV) along the route the Urals-Siberia-Kazakhstan, development of an automated control system, protection of energy objects from lightning, means of protection of rear bird species hitting electric transmission lines and many other works. Achievements of Azeri scientists are implemented in the Republican energy supply system of Azerbaijan and in other energy systems of NIS. Electroenergy department is staffed by scientists of the highest qualifications, who have promoted development of energy and their science, with a great number of implemented works, scientific monographs and publications to their credit.

Objectives of the Department are dictated by available capacities, existing scientific problems and transition of independent Azerbaijan to a market economy.

Objectives of the Department: development of a scientifically-substantiated concept of the prospects of electric energy production as a component of the fuel and energy complex of Azerbaijan Republic and the Region; improvement of management systems for energy industry ensuring its economic efficiency and reliability; development of efficient and environment-friendly technologies for energy generation, transmission and utilisation; introduction of alternative energy sources into the structure of the fuel and energy complex of the Republic.

"Electoenergy" Department comprises 2 sections.

SECTION: SYSTEM INVESTIGATIONS IN POWER ENGINEERING

Objectives of the Section: working out of a scientifically-substantiated concept for the future electric energy development as a component of the fuel and energy complex under market economy.

SECTION: MANAGEMENT OF ENERGY DEVELOPMENT

Objectives of the Section: development of effective methods and means for management of the electric energy system ensuring its reliability and stability.
